HOUSTON — Some residents are still recovering from the derecho storm in May and others are getting the process underway after Hurricane Beryl. Still, repairs at the Woodvine Apartment Complex in Spring Branch damaged in both storms are making it difficult for Jo Herbert and her family.
For 30 years, Herbert and her family have lived at the complex, now they're packing to move out after receiving a letter last Friday.
“The letter is saying to move as soon as possible,” said Herbert.
The letter from complex management said damage caused by recent storms needs to be repaired and they want to get started with those repairs this week.
“When we talked to them last week, we weren't being told we were being evicted,” said Herbert.
Jo agrees the complex needs to be fixed.
“This is the first time that there's been worse damage here in the 30 years I’ve been here. The apartment building right in front of us the roof, the corner of it came up off it. All the upstairs apartments got flooded in that building,” said Herbert.
But she can’t help but worry.
“All three of us have disabilities, and we're all on a fixed income. We have enough to pay our rent. We just don't have any extra, right now we're sitting about $10 between the three of us," she said.
According to the complex's letter, they'll refund money, but Jo and others won't see any of it until they turn their keys in.
“We're getting as much packed up as we can at the first. If we can't find a place, I guess we'll be living in a car and putting everything in storage. That's all we can do at this point,” said Herbert.
KHOU 11 News spoke with an office employee who said not everyone received a letter like Jo, just people who live in buildings with severe damage she doesn’t know if more people will get one of the letters like Jo did, they’re just taking day by day especially since we’re still in hurricane season
Jo and her family have created a GoFundMe to help them as they look for a new home.
