Neighbors helping neighbors: Southwest-side community bands together in times of need

HOUSTON — Natural disasters can bring out the worst in people and the best in people.

In Meadows Place on the southwest side, residents are coming together for their neighbors in need.

Right now, many are still struggling after Beryl ripped through the Houston area, leaving millions without power.

"We are a diverse community here. We all have our own ideals and our own lifestyle, but whenever tragedy strikes, we put all that aside and we want to be good humans and we're here to help each other," Chris Gawlik said.

They call themselves the MP Army. It's a tiny, but mighty, community that's always ready to lend a helping hand.

Today's mission: feeding those without power.

"I got a text about 8 o'clock this morning saying, 'Hey, we have a donation of all this food. We need someone to cook it,'" Angela Collins said.

And cooking is exactly what they did. They turned the donation of nearly 100 pounds of food into hot plates for everyone in need. Even the youngest members of the MP Army helped deliver food to a nearby senior living facility.

The MP Army is doing more than just providing food and water. They're also providing cold rags to help keep people cool on these hot summer days.

Those who received their help were grateful.

"It's a hot meal that I haven't had for days, and yeah, I really appreciate it and I'm blessed, really blessed," Monica Sintiellan said.

It's a chain reaction -- whenever one group of people starts helping, the other side of the neighborhood steps up to help.
