Colorado State University maintains its forecast of an active Atlantic hurricane season

They want to remind people -- it only takes one that affects you to make it an "active" season.

HOUSTON — A month after Hurricane Beryl slammed into the Texas coast, researchers at Colorado State released their updated Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast and they continue to call for an extremely active season.

Keep in mind – regardless of just how busy a hurricane season is, it just takes one to devastate a community. Beryl was evidence of that.

With the update that came out on Tuesday, Colorado State University lowered its number of named storms back down to 23 from 25. Of those 23, they call for 12 hurricanes. Of those 12 hurricanes, their forecast says six will be major.

The National Weather Service defines a major hurricane as a Category 3 or above or a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 111 mph and higher.

In their report released on Tuesday, they noted that sea surface temperatures in the main region for hurricane development remain near record warmth levels. That provides a better environment for formation and intensification. They also still anticipate a La Niña during the peak of the season, which would bring less vertical wind shear to keep storms from strengthening. Colorado State University researchers said Hurricane Beryl was a sign of a very active season ahead.
