HOUSTON — You probably noticed smog and hazy conditions Wednesday morning if you were on your way to work or school.
This is all due to controlled burns that are ongoing in Chambers County. Smoke and haze are causing lower air quality levels across Houston.
Wednesday, the air quality level in Houston is at "Moderate."
According to the air quality index, a "Moderate" level means that sensitive individuals with lung sensitivities should limit their time outdoors.
Can I go outside when there is poor air quality?
According to the National Weather Service, poor air quality can aggravate health issues such as asthma, heart conditions, and other respiratory conditions. Seniors, children, and those with compromised immune systems should be particularly careful.
Those who are vulnerable like children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues should stay indoors if possible. If you have to go outside, limit it to strictly essential activities.
Forecasted winds Wednesday are expected to be out of the southeast at 9-10 mph blowing smoke from the fires toward the Houston metro area.
As a temperature inversion is in place in the atmosphere above Southeast Texas, a warm layer in the upper levels of the atmosphere will keep the skies hazy across Houston throughout Wednesday.
