What we've learned about the nine people killed during severe derecho storm in the Houston area on May 16

Three of the victims were killed by falling trees or large branches and two men died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

HOUSTON — At least eight people have died in connection with Thursday's severe weather

Here's what we know

  1. 31-year-old Christen Martinez, a mother of four, was killed when a large tree fell on her car in Houston's East End.
  2. Manuel Palacio, 39, was killed by a large tree fell that fell on his home on North Main St. in the Heights. 
  3. Juan Hernandez, 72, was killed when a huge crane fell over and crushed the cab of a cement truck in the Magnolia Park area.
  4. 71-year-old Lydia Guerrero was killed by a tree branch on Jensen Drive.
  5. 50-year-old Brian Birdwell died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a generator in the garage on Valleyfield Drive.
  6.  51-year-old Raul Munoz Aleman died of carbon monoxide poisoning inside a vehicle running in a closed garage on Rim Rock.
  7. A woman, 85, and her dog died in fire caused by lightning on Cypress Meadows Dr. 
  8. A man, 57, died while trying to move a downed electrical pole on Kilkenny Gleen Drive.
  9. A 60-year-old man died while trying to plug in an oxygen tank.

Juan Hernandez, 72, was killed when winds between 90 and 100 mph toppled a huge crane and it crushed the cab of the cement truck.
