KINGWOOD, Texas – More than six months later, class is finally back in session Monday morning at Kingwood High School.
Hundreds of students, who have all been temporarily sharing the Summer Creek High Campus, headed back to their own newly renovated campus for the first time since Hurricane Harvey.
And it was all smiles as students made their way inside the newly remodeled building.
“Just really excited,” Cameron Dillon, a junior, said.
A much different scene, compared to half a year ago, when Harvey devastated the campus, leaving several feet of water inside.
“I never would have thought that my school be would not my school, so it’s great to be back,” junior Patricia Gordon said.
Since then, the place has been gutted, cleaned up, and only a few finishing touches remain.
From new floors to freshly painted walls, in total $53 million have gone into making this place home again.
It’s a speedy recovery process that took less than a year.
“Personally, I was expecting the whole 2017-2018 school year not being here, so when they told us you’re going back after spring break, it was like you’re kidding, right? It’s going to be done? We’re going to be back in our school, back in our hallways, it was really exciting,” Gordon said.
While the process hasn’t been easy, students say Harvey leaves behind a valuable lesson.
“Harvey really proved that we’re above all people who want to help each other, and want to be together,” she said.
For anyone interested in celebrating the school’s grand re-opening, there will be an open house this Saturday, March 24 from 4 to 7 p.m.
The public is invited.
There will be a pep-rally, games, food trucks, and much more.
