GALVESTON — Heavy storms in Galveston County led to flash flooding and property damage on Saturday and forced the cancellation of the annual Shrimp Festival on the island.
The festival's events will happen on Sunday but this was not how tourists and business owners hoped to start the weekend.
This month has been the wettest September on record since September 1885.
KHOU 11 found a former U.S. Marine on the Galveston Strand doing his best to brighten the moods of those caught up in the soggy mess.
"We prepare for disasters like this," said Galveston resident Mark Metzger, pulling along an inflatable caravan of unicorn boats. "You know, we didn’t know it was going to flood today — but you know, we had to get our emergency evacuation vehicles ready."
Metzger and a friend may have attempted to perform their stunt in jest but actually helped some tourists stranded on a street corner.
"Little kids, toddlers, boys and girls," Metzger said. Trying to make the best out of a bad situation.
Much of Broadway and bisecting roads were impassable due to the flooding along with much of the roadways connecting to Market Street.
Cars left parked on some streets overnight flooded by noon and some drivers who tried to test the water's depths will likely be filing insurance claims on Monday morning.
