LAKE JACKSON, Texas — Rain and storms moved through the Houston area Friday morning and now we know a brief, weak tornado touched down, too. It was the first tornado to touch down in the U.S. in 2024.
According to the National Weather Service, the EF-0 tornado was on the ground for about 200 yards in Lake Jackson. It had winds of 80 miles per hour. The good news -- no injuries were reported and there was only minor damage.
According to KHOU 11 meteorologist Pat Cavlin, the tornado was the first one to be on the ground in the contiguous United States in the new year.
More severe weather is possible in the Houston area Monday. Right now, the timing is early afternoon to the evening, so it could interfere with the College Football Playoff national championship game. Download the KHOU 11 app and we’ll send you alerts and updates on the possible storms.
