The Harris Co. Toll Road Authority is taking over TxTAG operations. Here's what that means for you.

The Harris County Toll Road Authority is taking over operations of TxTAG.

HOUSTON — Do you have use TxTAG to drive through toll booths? There's a big change you need to know about.

Transportation leaders have approved plans for the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) to take over TxTAG operations starting soon.

The HCTRA will handle toll collection and customer service operations for TxTAG. The Texas Department of Transportation currently operates TxTAG and says the switch will benefit drivers.

TxDOT says the transition will help provide simplified billing and more options when it comes to paying the tolls.

With the transition, customers can pay tolls at EZ Tag stores in the Houston area and at the 5,000 participating locations around the state, including Walmart and H-E-B.

Toll rates will not be affected directly from the transition, but they could be adjusted by January 1.
