The State Department has issued a Level 2 advisory for the Bahamas.

HOUSTON — A Level 3 travel advisory has been re-issued for Trinidad and Tobago due to terrorism and kidnapping, according to the U.S. State Department, meaning citizens should reconsider traveling there.

Right now, U.S. government employees are not allowed to travel to the following parts of Port of Spain: Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queens’ Park Savannah. And after dark, U.S. government personnel aren’t allowed to go to Port of Spain, Fort George overlook and all beaches.

The State Department said violence and shootings occur regularly in parts of Port of Spain.

They also said that gang activity is common in Trinidad and Tobago in general and much of the crime there is gang-related. They said that includes violent crime, like murder, sexual assault, home invasion and kidnapping.

If you do decide to go there, the State Department suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to get alerts so you can be found in the event of an emergency. You should also follow the State Department on social media.
