HOUSTON — A big change is coming for Southwest Airlines this weekend. They will stop flying in and out Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Sunday is the last day for Southwest at the big airport, though they will continue operations out of Hobby, which is where the majority of the airline’s flights have been.
Southwest first announced the news that they were leaving Bush in April after first quarter earnings report showed a loss. At the time, CEO Robert Jordan said the airline lost $231 million and was taking cost cutting measures that included leaving Bush.
Southwest started flying in and out of Bush Airport back in 2021 after a 16-year absence according to Houston Airport Systems. The effective date for shutting down operations again there is Sunday, August 4.
Aside from Bush Airport, Southwest announced in April it would stop flying to Cozumel, Syracuse and Bellingham, Washington.
It's one of two big changes happening with Southwest Airlines. Earlier this month, they announced they were ditching open seating for seats that are assigned.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story noted that the final day was Saturday. It's actually Sunday.
