Harris Co. Toll Road Authority takes over TxTAG operations

The Harris County Toll Road Authority is taking over the operations of TxTAG.

HOUSTON — Do you use TxTAG to drive through toll booths? If so, your account just changed hands.

The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) took over TxTAG operations on Monday. Drivers do not need to make a new account. Existing accounts will be migrated. Drivers should log on and make sure their account is active.

The HCTRA will handle toll collection and customer service operations for TxTAG. The Texas Department of Transportation currently operates TxTAG and says the switch will benefit drivers.

TxDOT said the transition will help provide simplified billing and more options when it comes to paying tolls.

HCTRA will manage the toll road billing for Houston and Austin. TxDOT will still own and maintain the roads.

With the transition, customers can pay tolls at EZ Tag stores in the Houston area and the 5,000 participating locations around the state, including Walmart and H-E-B. These locations can handle cash transactions as well as credit and debit.

Toll rates will not be affected directly by the transition, but they could be adjusted by Jan. 1.
