HOUSTON — The construction at Bush Intercontinental Airport will impact international travelers this week.
Overnight detours will continue this week outside of Terminal D, but the airline and airports are working to accommodate people.
Travelers said navigating Bush airport right now is a challenge.
“Basically, (the construction) set back all people, not only me, there is, if you can look over here, always there is a traffic jam you can see,” Anoop Purushothaman, who spoke with KHOU and is traveling to India, said.
This week, the Houston Airport System said a piece of the new baggage handling system will be moved into place.
North Terminal Road will be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. through Friday, Dec. 8. It will impact passengers departing from Terminal D after 9 p.m. EVA Airlines and Viva Aerobus have departing flights scheduled after 9 p.m. from Terminal D.
If you need to check into Terminal C, D, or E, take extra time to get to the airport.
If you need to reach Terminal D there are two ways to get there:
- Drop off at Terminal C via JFK Boulevard and utilize the Subway to reach Terminal D.
- Drop off at the Terminal E Arrivals curb on South Terminal Road via JFK Boulevard and use the pedestrian tunnel to reach Terminal D via the escalators
One woman picking up her husband from Indonesia said she’s not experiencing any issues driving through the airport.
“I mean, it is Christmas time and I am an international traveler, but I think the whole world needs to be ‘get to the airport on time,’” Pamela Rowe, from League City, said.
Airport officials said they’re not anticipating significant construction delays. Travelers are hoping the project goes smoothly.
“I’m not sure about that the duration, the time it will take to complete this one, but my hope is that they complete it as soon as possible,” Purushothaman said.
The airport said extra law enforcement will be on hand to direct passengers through the construction. Passengers are encouraged to arrive early at the airport for late-night or early-morning departures. Those who are picking up passengers are encouraged to arrive early and use a cellphone lot to safely park until the passengers can call or text to communicate their exact pickup location.
It’s estimated the construction of the terminal will be significantly completed in late 2024.
