HOUSTON — As people start to make plans for holiday trips, gas prices across the country are down over the last month or so.
That could lead to crowded roads as we approach Thanksgiving.
Before you head out, there are some tips to help you on your holiday road trip.
Celebrating the holidays sometimes includes traveling somewhere. While flying is popular, AAA said the most common form of transportation for holiday weekends is by car.
Prepping early can make your travels smoother and less stressful.
"Many people travel for Thanksgiving because, you know, it's a time to reconnect with their loved ones, share traditions, welcome in the holiday season," AAA's Doug Shupe said.
Driving is cheaper than flying, which is one of the many reasons people choose crowded airports.
"It's the most economical mode of transportation for most people. I mean, you can pack the kids in the vehicle and drive to your destination and home for a lot less money than for flying everybody," Shupe said.
Shupe said drivers can expect to pay less at the pump when traveling this holiday season.
"We're looking at gas prices being about $0.20 less per gallon than they were last year at this time," he said.
You should plan your trip before you fill up your gas tank.
"Look at which routes will likely be the most congested. We know the big highways are going to be very crowded," Shupe said. "You really want to leave as early in the day as you possibly can. What you want to do is avoid those afternoon traffic times."
Typically, the busiest time to drive is Wednesdays between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. but before you hit the road, you'll want to make sure your car is ready.
"Look at your tire tread and inflation," Shupe said.
You'll also want to check your fluid levels, headlights, tail lights, turn signals and windshield wipers.
"In the heat and the sun here in Southeast Texas, our windshield wiper blades start becoming brittle and then they don't clearly remove the water from the windshield," Shupe said.
Checking everything off a list will help prevent the possibility of being stuck on the side of the road.
