HOUSTON- A woman died and six others were injured in a car accident on the Katy Freeway early Sunday morning.

According to the Houston Police Department, the accident happened around 1:00 a.m. on the Katy Freeway at Washington Avenue. Police said a blue SUV traveling eastbound on the freeway slammed into the back of a black car that was moving slower.

The black car skid off the road into the grass on the side of the freeway. The blue SUV spun around and was hit by a gold color car, head on.

The Houston Fire Department had to extract the occupants of the two vehicles because they were pinned inside.

There was a man driving the blue SUV with a woman in the passenger seat. Both were transported to Ben Taub where the woman later died.

The occupants in the black car and the gold car were all transported to various hospitals, a total of seven people taken from the three automobiles.

HPD has yet to determine if alcohol was a factor. If the driver of the blue SUV was found to be intoxicated, he could face Intoxication Manslaughter charges.
