HOUSTON -- A person was killed on Highway 290 Thursday morning, shutting the freeway down for hours about four miles west of the 610 Loop.

Around 3:30 p.m., the highway was reopened to traffic, officials said.

Witnesses said the driver of a tractor trailer truck was driving eastbound on the freeway when a man intentionally jumped from a bridge down to the freeway below and was hit by the truck.

Houston Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Houston TranStar reported the incident happened around 11:40 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Pinemont.

All traffic is being forced to the frontage road until 43rd Street. Traffic was backed up about five miles, leading to a 20-minute delay eastbound.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
