Two dead in wreck on Highway 288 southbound at MacGregor | SB lanes reopen

Investigators don't believe the driver was speeding at the time, but said there was no evidence that the car tried to brake.

HOUSTON — A deadly crash shut down the southbound lanes Highway 288 at MacGregor for hours Sunday morning. According to the Houston Police Department, two people were killed in the crash.

Houston Transtar verified the crash at 7 a.m. and reported it was cleared at 12:08 p.m.

Witnesses told Houston police the car, a red Jeep, left the road and slammed into the concrete base of a light pole and burst into flames. Police said a male driver and female passenger were killed in the crash.

Investigators don't believe the driver was speeding at the time, but said there was no evidence that the car tried to brake.

HPD's Vehicular Crime Division is investigating.
