HOUSTON — A deadly crash tied up traffic on the North Loop on the northeast side Wednesday afternoon.
According to Houston TranStar, the crash happened around 3:10 p.m. It forced both directions of the I-610 North Loop at Homestead to be shut down for more than six hours while crews worked to clear the crash site. The freeway has since reopened.
According to investigators, an 18-wheeler was hauling a crawler bulldozer when a red Mazda changed lanes and struck the front of the truck, causing the driver to lose control.
The big rig crashed into the middle concrete divider in the westbound lanes and the bulldozer came loose and slid into oncoming traffic. According to Air 11 video, the bulldozer appeared to have come to rest against a guardrail all the way across the eastbound lanes of the freeway.
The bulldozer struck a car and truck after it fell off the trailer.
The driver of one of those vehicles, a red Ford Mustang, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was the only person in the car. His name hasn't been released.
The 18-wheeler driver was taken to an area hospital with a head injury.
The driver of the Mazda remained at the scene and the driver was later taken to an area hospital to be checked. out.
The driver of the pickup wasn't hurt.
