Good news for drivers who travel on the 610-Southwest Freeway interchange

A project that's been years in the works is finally open and will have a ribbon-cutting to celebrate.

HOUSTON — Good news, drivers! A major traffic headache clears up Thursday with the reopening of the West Loop-Southwest Freeway interchange.

It's a project that's been years in the works, with the goal of improving safety along one of the busiest roadways in Texas.

The 610-Southwest Freeway project included reconstruction of the I-610 West Loop main lane bridge and conversions of single-lane and two-lane connectors between the two freeways. There were new access ramps that were added, too, as well as other upgrades to existing ramps and shoulders.

While TxDOT said told KHOU 11 that there may be an occasional closure, all lanes and ramps are open in their final configuration.

Officials plan to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday morning.

While one opens back up, other roads will close down

And while traffic will open back up on Thursday on that interchange, there are other closures this weekend you'll want to know about.

First, TxDOT will close the main lanes of I-45 southbound from Callie Street to Spur 5 from 5 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday for bridge repairs.

And for those of you driving in Fort Bend County, crews will close the main lanes of the Southwest Freeway southbound from University Boulevard to Highway 99 starting Friday at 9 p.m. through Monday, August 5 at 5 a.m.
