12-year-old girl killed in rollover crash on the Grand Parkway, sheriff says

A 12-year-old girl was ejected from the rollover crash and pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff said.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A deadly crash shut down the Grand Parkway for several hours early Monday, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

This happened just after midnight heading south near West Road.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a 12-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle.

The sheriff said a 36-year-old woman was driving on the Grand Parkway following a visit to San Antonio for the weekend. She was heading home to Conroe. The were five other people in the car with her including her 56-year-old mother and four children, ages 1, 3, 12, and 16.

The sheriff said the vehicle went off the roadway, striking a cable barrier system, and began to roll. That's when the 12-year-old child, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. According to Gonzalez, she was dead at the scene.

Everyone was taken to the hospital. The sheriff said the 16-year-old suffered a broken clavicle.

The driver of the vehicle is the aunt of the 12-year-old girl who was killed in the crash. The sheriff said the driver was cooperating with the investigation and showed no signs of intoxication.

At this point, we don't know what caused the driver to go off the road.

Traffic was being forced to exit before the crash scene. KHOU 11 traffic expert Jennifer Reyna said drivers should use Fry Road until the Grand Parkway reopens.
