Off-duty HPD lieutenant involved in deadly crash on West Loop, police say

The freeway closure could last until 7:30 a.m. as Houston police investigate.

HOUSTON — A deadly crash had the 610 West Loop shut down near the Katy Freeway Thursday morning, according to Houston Transtar.

This happened at 2:42 a.m. heading north. Traffic was being diverted from the West Loop to the Katy Freeway before the roadway was reopened at 6:50 a.m.

Houston police said an HPD lieutenant who works the night shift was driving home in an unmarked city vehicle when he hit a pedestrian on the West Loop near the Post Oak exit by the Galleria.

Then another SUV hit the lieutenant from behind.

The pedestrian was killed, but everyone else is OK. At this point, police can’t say if the pedestrian is a man or a woman.

They also can’t explain why that person was trying to cross 610 during the early morning hours.

“I spoke to the lieutenant. He’s shaken up by the accident by he’s uninjured,” HPD Assist. Chief Adrian Rodriguez said. “Our prayers go out to him and his family. And the deceased pedestrian. Please pray for them.”

Police said the off-duty lieutenant has been with HPD for 14 years. He will be placed on administrative leave while this is investigated.
