Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he pictures a world where the headsets we use for virtual and augmented realities will resemble eye glasses, a concept tried with great fanfare but limited use with Google Glass.
Zuckerberg made the comments Tuesday during a keynote at the F8 developers conference in San Francisco.
As part of Facebook's "road map" for the next 10 years, Zuckerberg says VR and AR will play a key role, along with artificial intelligence and connecting more people around the world.
Over time, the form factors for VR and AR will shrink, morphing from bulky headsets like we see with devices including the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to eye glass frames. "In the future, you'll be able to snap your fingers and show a picture as big as you want it" on AR glasses, says Zuckerberg.
"It's going to take a long time to make this work," he notes.
The image of eyeglasses displayed during f8 conjured up memories of Google Glass, Google's eyewear that allowed users to perform tasks from surfing the Web to taking photos and video.
Last year, the company scaled back on an Explorers program for consumers interested in owning Google Glass. Nest founder Tony Fadell is leading design on a new version of the eye wear. Last December, images surfaced of the revamped Glass, which features a hinge allowing users to fold the device.
