UH removes Chris Pezman as athletics director

The University of Houston said it's starting a nationwide search for a new athletics director immediately.

HOUSTON — The University of Houston announced Thursday that it parted ways with Chris Pezman, the university's former athletics director.

"Chris Pezman has ushered our athletics program through a period of incredible transformation, and we are grateful for his leadership over the past six years," UH President Renu Khator said in a release. "He has been a pivotal part of our entry into the Big 12 Conference and championed the success of student-athletes on the field and in the classroom. This was a difficult but necessary decision as we navigate a paradigm shift in collegiate athletics. I want to thank Chris for his dedication to UH and to our student-athletes. On behalf of the University, I wish Chris and his family the very best."

The news comes about half a year after UH fired Dana Holgorsen as its football coach and hired Willie Fritz to replace him.

Pezman had served in the role since 2017 when he was named the program's 11th athletic director.

UH said in a release that it is starting its search for a new AD immediately.

During the transition, Raymond S. Bartlett, UH's Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance, will serve as interim athletics director.
