PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — SWAC champion Prairie View A&M will face Fairleigh Dickinson in a play-in game of the NCAA tournament.
This is the first time the Panthers captured both the regular and tournament championships in the same season after defeating Texas Southern in the SWAC Championship Tournament on Saturday.
If they win Thursday, the Panthers get to play No. 1 seed Gonzaga next Saturday.
"This was truly a remarkable night and I am so proud of this team and the accomplishment we made tonight," said head men's basketball coach Byron Smith." All I can do is thank the man upstairs for making this happen. We had a rough start but the ending is a fairy tale within it's self."
The championship is the second in program history and the first since 1998.
"I can't put into words just how proud and happy I am for our student athletes and our coaching staff," said Vice President /Director of Athletics. "They were special tonight and part of an amazing game to watch. Our athletes, our band, the Panther Dolls as well as the cheerleaders, along with all the students that were here representing the #PVNATION were simply amazing."
