Former Houston defensive coordinator and interim head coach Wade Phillips joins Gary Kubiak's staff with the Denver Broncos as the team's defensive coordinator.

Former Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips tells KHOU 11 Sports that he has been hired to be the next defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos.

Phillips joins Gary Kubiak in Denver, who he worked under in Houston. Kubiak was named the Broncos head coach Jan. 19.

Phillips was Kubiak's defensive coordinator in Houston from 2011-2013. When Kubiak was fired in 2013, Phillips was named the Texans interim coach for three games. He interviewed for the Texans head coaching job and was later dismissed by Bill O'Brien.

He did not coach in 2014.

Phillips returns to Denver where he was the defensive coordinator from 1989-1992 and then head coach from 1993-1994.
