HOUSTON – The Houston Texans organization announced that proceeds from T-shirts honoring offensive lineman David Quessenberry will go to benefit the Lymphoma Research Foundation.
On Saturday, Texans players and coaches wore the "Texans for DQ" shirts at practice.
"I think it's amazing. It means a lot to myself; it means a lot to my teammates and I can only imagine how DQ feels," Texans left tackle Duane Brown said. "We are just trying to show our support as much as possible to let him know that he's always in our hearts and in our minds."
Texans head coach Bill O'Brien echoed those sentiments.
"This whole team is behind him. He's a very bright guy, he's a fighter," O'Brien said. "He's just a special guy. He means a lot to this team and to especially the offensive linemen. We just wanted to represent him out there at practice."
The offensive line has dedicated the 2014 season to Quessenberry who is currently in San Diego undergoing some of the chemotherapy treatments. The goal for the organization is to raise $100,000 from the sales of the shirts.
All the money raised will be donated to the foundation in David's name.
"He was kind of, I don't want to say shocked, but that's kind of a cool thing when you think about it," center Chris Myers said. "To be able to get those funds, it's going to go to amazing research for a great cause and obviously raise awareness on what DQ has."
The final open practice of training camp on Aug. 14 will be #DQStrong Day. All staff will wear the shirt on this day and the Texans encourage the fans and Houston community to purchase a shirt and wear them alongside the team.
"I think it just speaks volumes of what he means to us, the impression he made on us before everything happened with the diagnosi," Myers said. "He's a great guy, great character guy, works his butt off out here throughout all last year, coming back from his injury and trying to get into the line-up this year, and then obviously he got that news, so right when it happened, he's had the upmost support from everybody."
Shirts will be sold at the Go Texans Store at NRG stadium and online at shop.houstontexans.com beginning today for $20.
