HOUSTON — Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud remained off the field and in the concussion protocol on Wednesday as this weekend’s matchup with the Tennessee Titans approaches. Stroud was injured in last weekend's 30-6 loss to the New York Jets.
While Stroud was absent, head coach DeMeco Ryans said he was getting better. Meanwhile, backup quarterbacks Davis Mills and Case Keenum were getting the reps. Mills has been the No. 2 quarterback all season.
“I just know in this league, you never know what happens in that position,” Ryans said. “It’s comforting to have three guys who can go out and play.”
The good news for Houston -- receiver Nico Collins was present at practice after leaving last weekend’s loss against the Jets in the first quarter with a calf injury. Tight end Dalton Schultz was also back out on the field and kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn returned after missing several weeks with an injury.
“Kind of like riding a bike," Fairbairn said about being back. "Mentally, going through the routine of everything and getting ready for Sunday."
Stroud usually talks to the media on Wednesdays. If he isn’t back out on the practice field on Thursday, the team said it’ll make the other quarterbacks available.
The Texans are one of several teams sitting at 7-6 with four games remaining in the season. Houston is right in the thick of the playoff hunt.
