HOUSTON — Two Astros were named starters in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
Jose Altuve was named the starter at second base and Yordan Alvarez earned the nod at designated hitter. It's the fourth time in team history that two players have been named starters.
The game will be played in Arlington at the Rangers' home stadium Globe Life Field on July 16 at 7 p.m.
It will be Altuve's ninth All-Star selection and sixth time being named a starter. Alvarez will make his third All-Star team and first starting nod.
Altuve has earned the most All-Star nominations in Astros history. Entering Wednesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Altuve was hitting .308 with 13 homers, 17 doubles, 38 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 83 games. He also hadn't made an error all season.
Alvarez becomes the first Astros designated hitter to be named an All-Star Game starter. Entering Wednesday night's game, he owned a .297 average with 18 homers, 19 doubles and 46 RBI in 82 games.
OF Kyle Tucker has been added as a reserve.
Tucker is now a three-time All-Star, having been named to the Fall Classic in each of the last three seasons (2022-24). Tucker was in the AL MVP conversation earlier this season but has been sidelined with a right shin contusion since June 7. In 60 games this season, Tucker is hitting .266 (57x214) with 11 doubles, 19 homers, 40 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .979 OPS.
The Astros continue a run of having at least three All-Stars in every All-Star Game since the 2017 season. The Astros 33 All-Star selections since 2017 are the most of any American League club in that span.
