HOUSTON — Game 7 of the American League Championship Series is now into the bullpen and both managers are making it clear that they’ve got short hooks.
Astros manager Dusty Baker pulled Cristian Javier after a third of an inning and three runs. Texas starter Max Scherzer was replaced in the third after giving up two runs.
Before the game, Baker was asked about the possibility of using three-time Cy Young Award winner and future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander in relief if needed.
“I would like not to be, if possible, because unless we go into extra innings or whatever it is,” he said. “So, I mean, he's coming off his Tommy John. Is a risk worth the gain of his career next year. So I believe in winning games, but not necessarily at a possible all cost of a big man's health.”
Verlander started ALCS Games 1 and 5 of the ALCS, so if he did come in, it would be on three days rest.
