DALLAS — Hope returned to many fans Wednesday afternoon that the Houston Astros may re-sign third baseman Alex Bregman.

The Bregman deal appeared to be on ice when the Astros pursued Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals. Arenado is an eight-time All Star.

Arenado would not waive his no-trade clause to come to Houston, according to MLB.com.

With that door closing, the Astros have reportedly renewed efforts to re-sign Bregman. USA Today's Bob Nightengale said the Astros are "still very much in play" for Bregman.

Bregman is looking for north of $200 million. The Astros' reported offer was at $156 million leading into Winter Meetings.

The Astros traded Kyle Tucker last week.
