HOUSTON — The Astros are sitting atop the American League West, a percentage point better than Seattle, and Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman are two big reasons.

On Monday, the teammates were named American League Co-Players of the Week for the week of August 5-12. For the week, Bregman was 12 for 27 for a .444 average with three doubles, three home runs and six RBIs. Alvarez, who bats behind him in the order, had his 19th career game with multiple home runs on Sunday. For the week, Alvarez was 9 for 21 with one double five home runs and eight RBIs.

Alvarez and Bregman are the first Astros players to be honored as Players of the Week since Ronel Blanco earned the honor of April of this year. As far as two Astros being Co-Players of the Week? That’s only happened once in franchise history when Richard Hidalgo and Julio Lugo did it in September of 2000.

For both Alvarez and Bregman, this is the third time they’ve each earned Player of the Week honors.

The last time teammates were honored as Co-Players of the Week was in August of 2022 when Cardinals players Paul Goldschmidt and Albert Pujols earned it.
