NEW YORK Jim Kelly flew to New York on Monday to consult with doctors about his new battle with cancer.

On Friday, doctors at the Erie County (N.Y.) Medical Center announced that Kelly s cancer, which originally was in his jaw, had recurred and spread.

Jim and wife Jill Kelly met with doctors to discuss possible treatment options.

On Monday afternoon, Jill shared a photo on Instagram and Twitter of her wearing her husband s cross. She wrote that Jim took off his necklace and handed it to me before heading in for yet another MRI.

Now it s around my neck. A reminder that because of the cross, because of what JESUS did, we have hope. Hope when you hear them say the cancer is back ...because God is bigger than the cancer.

Earlier in the day Jim Kelly had tweeted out this message of support: Thank you for your prayers during this time #PrayersForJK Friends and former teammates visited with him at the hospital late last week. One of them was Ruben Brown.

He s in good spirits, he has an optimistic look on this thing, said Brown, a former Buffalo Bill. He believes he s going to fight through it and make the best of it. It s an unfortunate setback right now. It tugs at your heartstrings I would say to everyone who s out there watching, Jim is his old usual self, cracking jokes and taking this thing in stride.

Ex-Bill Steve Tasker has also been in contact with his former quarterback.

He was in good spirits and we were laughing and joking as we always do although he mapped out in pretty good detail what he s looking at over the next few months, said Tasker. He knows he s in for a fight but he s ready for it and I m kind of proud of him he seemed great.

Brown writes for WGRZ-TV in Buffalo
