HOUSTON β The City of Houston honored its best in sports at the Houston Sports Awards on Tuesday night at 713 Music Hall in downtown.
Aside from the awards, the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority honored Warren Moon, Cynthia Cooper and Lance Berkman as inductees into the 2024 Houston Sports Hall of Fame. They were each selected for their work on the field and in the Houston community.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Houston native Louis M. Pearce Jr. for his more than six decades of work with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was also honored with the first-ever βLifetime Civic Champion Award.β While Turner was mayor, the city hosted more major sporting events than any other major U.S. city, according to the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority.
Winners
C.J. Stroud was named the Athlete of the Year.
The Moment of the Year went to the Texans for drafting C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr.
Stroud was named the Newcomer of the Year.
Willis High School's D.J. Lagway was named the Male High School Athlete of the Year.
Lake Creek High School's Ava Brown was named the Female High School Athlete of the Year.
Peggy Turner, of TIRR Memorial Herman, earned the Community Impact Award.
Humble ISD teacher Eric Coovert won the Inspiration Award.
