HOUSTON -- One of the most storied franchises in Houston history is now history.
The Comets are disbanding effective immediately.
The team won the first 4 WNBA championships. But when Rockets owner Leslie Alexander sold the club, things started to spiral downwards.
Earlier this year, Houston Businessman Hilton Koch told the league he could no longer continue to own the team
Koch told 11 Sports Reporter Matt Musil Monday night, the WNBA did not give him the financial resources that he was promised.
Sources are now telling KHOU-TV that the league had a couple of offers to purchase the team. however, the potential owners could not put together a deal in time for the upcoming season.
The WNBA will hold a dispersal draft next week.
At their height the Comets were one of the most successful franchises both on the court and at the gate, but in the most recent years, the crowds began to diminish.
This season the team moved to Reliant Arena, and the team no longer attracted the large crowds of their heyday.
The Comets did provide several Houston sports personalities. Long time Head Coach Van Chancellor who led the team to the four championships later coached the US Olympic team to a gold medal. Now a coach at LSU, Chancellor is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson were the club's big three during their title years. Cooper is the Head Coach of the Women's Basketball team at Prairie View, Swoopes now plays for the Seattle Storm, while Thompson is the only player left from the original Comets team.
