SANTA FE, Texas - What defines a community? It’s not the buildings, nor the places -- it’s not even a city marker that says you’ve arrived.
It’s the people.
Four months ago, the usually quiet town was shaken to its core by a senseless act of violence at the high school which claimed the lives of 10 people. The national spotlight came but quickly went away, leaving the residents to overcome this tragedy emotionally with each other.
As you drive down Highway 646, you see banners with three words, “SANTA FE STRONG." Those three words have become a rallying cry and leading the charge is the football team.
The Santa Fe Indians returned to action on Friday, Aug. 31 for their first game since the shooting. KHOU 11 Sports was with the team the week leading up to that big night, capturing all the sights and sounds, emotions and results of an event that helped the city return to a sense of normalcy.
“Santa Fe Strong” is their story, and an amazing story worth hearing.
