Houston-area quarterback named MaxPreps National High School Player of the Year

Lagway, who is committed to play at the University of Florida, threw for 58 touchdown passes.

WILLIS, Texas — The Houston area is a hotbed for high school football talent, so it's no surprise that the No. 1 player in the country is from right here in Southeast Texas.

D.J. Lagway of Willis High School was named the MaxPreps National High School Player of the Year Tuesday.

Lagway led Willis to an undefeated regular season and a deep playoff run, ending with a loss to eventual state champion DeSoto. He was 290 of 402 for 4,604 yards and 58 touchdowns on the season. He averaged 364.2 yards passing per game.

Lagway is committed to play at the University of Florida next season.
