HOUSTON – University of Houston Football head coach Tom Herman announced the first signing class of his head coaching career Wednesday, National Signing Day, with 21 student-athletes signing National Letters of Intent to join the Cougar program.

The 21 signees consist of 16 from the state of Texas, three from the state of Louisiana and one each from Mississippi and Wisconsin. The class is comprised of one senior, two juniors and 18 freshmen.

"We're thrilled for this class as a whole. We have a wide array of players coming in from guys who were already committed and loved the University of Houston, guys who had been recruited to our program and we were able to seal the deal with and guys who had been committed to other schools but saw what Houston had to offer them," said Herman. "I'm just thrilled they allowed me to build a relationship with them in the short period of time we were provided to establish a new era of Houston Football."

The offensive side of the ball leads the group with 12 signees while the defensive side has eight signees and one signee, Kameron Eloph, listed as an athlete.

The group is buoyed by five linebackers with the offensive line, tight ends and wide receiver group each bringing in three signees apiece. Houston added two running backs and two defensive backs each while adding one defensive lineman, one athlete and one quarterback.

"We addressed our major needs. We had glaring needs at offensive line and linebacker and had zero scholarship tight ends," added Herman. "Filling those positions was essential and we feel we have accomplished that today. We've already started on our 2016 class and the excitement of today's signing class certainly helps us."

The group has accumulated seven state championships with 13 freshmen earning all-district first team honors and five being named to the Houston Chronicle Top 100.

Four signees have already joined the Houston program in four-year transfers WR Chance Allen (Oregon) and QB Adam Schulz (Utah), junior college transfer TE Rusty Clark (Pearl River CC) and early high school enrollee WR Devin Smith (John Curtis HS).
