HOUSTON — Drake is showing support for his new hometown team-- the University of Houston's Men's basketball team.
On Sunday, the Coogs were named a top seed in the upcoming NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. It's the second straight season UH earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament. Last year, Houston lost to Miami in the Sweet 16.
This year, Houston is the No. 1 seed in the South Region. The Cougars are taking on No. 16 Longwood in Memphis on Friday. A matchup with No. 9 Texas A&M is possible in the second round. The Aggies would have to beat No. 8 Nebraska in the first round to make it happen.
The team gathered at the Post Oak Hotel Sunday to watch the NCAA Selection Show. Following the announcement, the Coogs and Tilman Fertitta were joined by Drake at the hotel penthouse for a fundraiser, where Drake was presented with an honorary Coogs jersey.
The jersey has the number 24 on it, which Fertitta said "is going to be a big special year for UH."
Another jersey signed by Drake will be auctioned off.
"It was great to see you all today. I wish you all the best of luck," Drake said to the team.
Drake said he and Fertitta talk a lot and have some "great things in the works for UH."
“I say at the end of my show, I never dreamed i’d live anywhere else other than Canada, Toronto," Drake said during his visit. But something always keeps drawing me back to Houston and now I’m splitting my time, so, hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”
Houston (30-4) finished the season atop the AP college basketball rankings and won the regular season conference championship, but fell to Iowa State in the Big 12 tournament title game on Saturday.
Houston is a No. 1 seed for the third time in school history, joining the 1983 team that reached the national championship game and last season's Coogs, which lost in the Sweet 16 to Miami.
