HOUSTON — Popular Atlanta Braves third base coach Ron Washington is interested in the Houston Astros' vacant manager position, KHOU 11 News’ Jason Bristol and KHOU 11 baseball analyst Jeremy Booth have learned.
Washington, 71, has been with Atlanta for the past seven seasons and is beloved by Braves players. As a manager, he twice guided the Texas Rangers to the World Series – in 2010 and 2011, respectively – before resigning for personal reasons.
It’s not known whether the Astros have mutual interest, however. Astros general manager Dana Brown worked for the Atlanta Braves while Washington was on the Braves’ coaching staff. Washington also served as a coach for the Oakland Athletics.
Bristol and Booth reported Washington’s interest on Monday. Dusty Baker, who managed the Astros from 2020 through 2023, announced on October 26 he was retiring from managing.
Washington, a native of New Orleans, also played briefly for the Astros in 1989. His 20-year professional career as a player ended in 1990 with the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate.
