No, HISD isn't making teachers cancel classroom holiday parties

A letter for one elementary school was circulating on social media, so we looked into it.

HOUSTON — Is Houston ISD making teachers cancel their classroom holiday parties?

A letter to parents sent out by an elementary school principal is going around on social media. It claims all winter parties scheduled for Wednesday were canceled and that teachers are working to return all items donated by parents. Many parents online aren't happy about this, so we took the letter to HISD to Verify.

What we found

The district sent us a statement saying the information in the letter is inaccurate, saying “Schools are welcome to have parties. Campus leaders were told at a recent principals meeting that this is a celebratory time and schools can hold parties at lunch and before or after school. If campuses are planning to celebrate the holidays during class time, the celebrations should be tied to instruction."

HISD also got back to us, saying the principal sent an updated note Wednesday, telling teachers they can have winter holiday parties in the classroom.

So we can Verify that HISD is allowing teachers to have holiday parties in the classroom.
