The University of Texas announced Monday that the university’s next mascot has been selected and is “in the midst of training.”
The Silver Spurs Alumni Association, who cares for the mascot, has identified the next longhorn to carry the name Bevo. UT said he is set for his public debut prior to UT football’s season opener against Notre Dame on Sept. 4.
"Bevo has embodied Longhorn pride and Texas spirit for 100 years," UT President Gregory L. Fenves said in a release. "He is part of our campus culture and has watched our football team's successes for decades. I'm looking forward to seeing Bevo XV in his place of honor on the field this coming season."
The previous Bevo, Bevo XIV, died in October 2014 shortly after being diagnosed with bovine leukemia.
UT said Bevo XV’s debut will correspond with the 100th anniversary of Bevo’s first appearance at a UT football game, which was Nov. 30, 2016.
"We are excited to kick off the upcoming athletics season by introducing the newest edition of one of our most beloved traditions at The University of Texas," said Texas Men's Athletics Director Mike Perrin in a release. "It's also appropriate to unveil Bevo XV during this 100th anniversary year. We all look forward to meeting Bevo XV in September."
