HOUSTON As many as 7,000 jobs at the Johnson Space Center could be impacted by President Barack Obama s budget, and layoffs are expected in the next few weeks.
The Texas Workforce Commission has opened the Aerospace Transition Center to help aerospace workers who have lost jobs transition into the next phase of their life. In addition to the Aerospace Transition Center, Workforce Solutions also has a website dedicated to the aerospace workforce.
Thousands of space contractors are hurting as they face the short-term prospect of layoffs and The Transition Center has already heard from workers who may face layoffs.
Economists initially predicted as many as 7,000 jobs lost at JSC, as many as 1,000 from the retirement of the Space Shuttle, and as many as 6,000 more from the president's cancellation of the Constellation project.
In April, the president changed course under pressure and kept parts of the project.
Now, sources in Congress say work is underway to reshape the president's newest proposal, and save more jobs.
I can assure you, that the proposed 2011 budget that came out of the administration, basically out of NASA headquarters, will not be passed as proposed, said Bob Mitchell, with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership.
