HOUSTON, Texas An auto theft suspect who said he was going to change his life after his brother was killed in an officer-involved shooting at Deerbrook Mall turned himself in Monday night in connection with a carjacking in a Walmart parking lot in Humble.
Joaquin Carlon was being held on $100,000 bond. He appeared before a judge in a Harris County courtroom around 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Humble police said the Walmart incident, which was caught by surveillance cameras, took place the day before the Deerbrook shooting.
Police said Joaquin Carlon and his brother, Esteban Carlon, were caught on camera stealing a car and running over an innocent woman and her husband as they tried to get away.
The Walmart surveillance video first shows an SUV pull in behind a parked car.
Police said that SUV was driven by Esteban Carlon.
Another person identified by police as Joaquin Carlon is seen exiting the SUV and entering the parked vehicle.
Moments after that, police said the parked car s owners, a husband and wife, came out of the Walmart.
Police said as the woman tried to get into her vehicle, Joaquin Carlon threw it into reverse, dragging her along until he hit a car parked behind him.
The woman shattered her arm and broke a leg.
Police said the husband then hopped in the car and started struggling with the suspect, who punched the gas, lost control and crashed into another parked car.
At that point, the SUV allegedly driven by Esteban Carlon lurched forward and T-boned the victims vehicle, injuring the husband.
Police said his leg was shattered.
Joaquin Carlon was then able to exit the victims vehicle and jump into the SUV, which police said was also stolen.
The suspects fled the scene.
Investigators said the Carlons were breaking into cars in the Deerbrook Mall parking lot the next day when an Humble police officer shot Esteban Carlon.
On January 24, investigators said two Humble police officers were headed to a bank on FM 1960, where the stolen SUV from theWalmart incidentwas reportedly abandoned, when they got the call about a car burglary in progress at Deerbrook Mall.
Thinking that these might be the same suspects as the day prior, they were ready to do what they needed to do. They knew they were going to be armed and possibly dangerous, Lt. Jay Wrobliske said.
When the officers arrived at Deerbrook, they said they saw Esteban Carlon get out of a parked pickup truck and into the passenger seat of another vehicle, which was also reported stolen. His brother Joaquin was behind the wheel.
Police said as they approached the suspects with their guns drawn, the suspects vehicle started backing up.
One of the officers shattered the passenger-side window with his handgun, and a single shot was fired, hitting Esteban Carlon in the head and killing him.
On January 25, Joaquin Carlon joined by local activist Quanell X held a press conference about the shooting.
At the press conference, Quanell X said Carlon had no excuses for his alleged crimes or the two previous times auto theft and other felonies have landed him and his brother in jail.
Joaquin Carlon said his life of crime was over, and that he planned to take care of his brother s pregnant wife and two daughters.
Carlon was out on bail when the warrant was issued in connection with the Walmart incident.
