HOUSTON A Houston judge has ordered a Spring ISD middle school teacher accused of raping a 13-year-old girl to wear an ankle monitor while he s free on $30,000 bond.
Andre Thomas appeared in court Thursday morning on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
According to court documents, the victim told police that Thomas who was her industrial technology teacher at Edward Roberson Middle School assaulted her on a desk in his classroom during his conference period on August 31.
The victim s parents took her to the Children s Assessment Center on October 4, where she made outcry about the assault and underwent a medical examination.
Charges were filed against Thomas on October 11.
In a letter sent to parents on October 12, Roberson Principal Thad Gittens addressed the charges.
I want to assure you that the safety of our students is of the highest importance at Roberson Middle School. The criminal history and references of job applicants are routinely checked before they are hired. Incidents involving improper relationships between teachers and students are not tolerated in Spring ISD, and allegations of this nature are taken seriously. The district has made it a practice to investigate thoroughly any report received and pursue criminal charges when appropriate, Gittens wrote.
Thomas has been at Roberson since August of 2009. He teaches sixth- and seventh-grade students.
Spring ISD put him on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
