New video released shows confusion in halls of Robb Elementary on day of mass shooting

In August, the Uvalde Police Department said it had released all videos related to the mass shooting. However, that was not the case.

UVALDE, Texas — Newly released video by the City of Uvalde shows previously unseen angles of the law enforcement response to the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting.

A lawsuit by multiple media outlets, including KHOU 11 and its parent company — TEGNA, Inc. — called for the city to release records tied to the shooting's response.

A settlement of the lawsuit led to a release of records in August and included police bodycam footage, text messages, 911 calls and more. But days later, it was discovered there was more video that had not been included in the release. Officials shared the new video Tuesday.

19 children and two teachers were killed when a gunman went into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, 2022.

The law enforcement response was widely criticized as the public learned responding officers waited more than 70 minutes before engaging with the gunman. The incident sparked state and federal investigations. A Department of Justice report found the law enforcement response was a failure and lives could have been saved had officers acted more quickly.

The hours of Tuesday's newly released video does not change the narrative of what occurred during the incident, but it does show new perspectives of the response by law enforcement, depicting the confusion on scene as multiple agencies responded.

One video shows the perspective of an officer going to comfort Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Officer Ruben Ruiz.

"Hey, she's a fighter, bro, you know that, she's strong," the officer says to Ruiz. "You got this brother, I love you."

Ruiz's wife, Eva Mirales, was one of the teachers killed in the shooting.

Former Uvalde Schools Police Chief Pete Arredondo and Officer Adrian Gonzalez are the only two people to have been charged in connection to the response to the shooting.
