UVALDE, Texas — More frustration for families hoping the Uvalde City Council would take action and refuse the report presented last week.
After that independent report hired by the city found no fault in the officers who responded to the Robb Elementary shooting, families said the Uvalde police chief, the mayor, assistant city manager and the city attorney promised them some kind of action during the city council meeting on Tuesday.
But Tuesday morning, Daniel Rodriguez, the police chief, abruptly resigned effective next month and he was not present at the meeting.
After nearly two years, it’s become the norm for the families of those killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting, to get on the podium and request action.
"These following officers should be terminated immediately. Javier Martinez , Eduardo Canales and Louis Landry," said Gloria Cazares, the mother of Jacki Cazares.
The family of Jackie Cazares said their daughter was shot in the chest and they believe she could have survived.
"If they would have gotten in sooner, they could have been alive," said Javier Cazares.
Last week an independent investigator hired by the city, presented his findings into the shooting. He said those city officers did not violate policy.
"We were told last week, y’all were going to talk about whether or not y’all accepted that disastrous report," said Brett Cross, the legal guardian of Uziyah Garcia.
But after going into executive session, the mayor said they wouldn’t talk about it at this meeting.
"I am going to break the rule and I understand how you feel. I have some more of time. Ya'll are sick of the can down the road. I feel you but have we have to have so more time," said Mayor Cody Smith.
The mayor said they needed to figure out what they can do.
"To determine what if any action if we can take…we need more time. And that is going to happen," said Smith.
For now these families will have to continue to wait as the birthdays, and the pain without their loved ones, drags on with this process.
"There is a family out there that is celebrating their child’s 12th birthday today. At the cemetery and yall still cant give us answers," said Cross.
It wasn’t clear when the city would bring this topic up again, but the mayor did say the resignation of the chief did not help.
By the way, Brett Cross did say he plans to sit outside the Uvalde Police Department until the city takes some action.
