MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas Seven people were injured in a series of explosions at a propane company just outside of Conroe Tuesday afternoon, according the Montgomery County Fire Marshal.
It happened at the AmeriGas plant in the 10900 block of FM 1485 near Waukegan Road around 12 p.m.
Witnesses said workers were loading propane tanks on a carousel when a leak set off a series of explosions.
I m shaking like a leaf right now, said Eric Garrett, who was working outside AmeriGas when he heard a loud whistling noise. Chaos followed.
It was just a loud explosion and we just all took off running, Garrett said. One of our guys took off for the big tank and shut off the main tank. But by the time he got out, some of our guys were hurt pretty bad.
Two people were critically burned and airlifted to UTMB in Galveston, according to Montgomery County Fire Jimmy Williams.
Five others were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance.
Our boss told us to leave. And I guess he didn t make it [out] because the blast from the center of the carousel blew him up against the wall, said Ben Townes, another AmeriGas employee. And then propane balls, leaking propane balls.
Garrett said some of the victims suffered horrible burns.
It s something you see on a horror movie. You don t think you ll ever see that in person, you know. It s rough. It s hard to see, he said.
Firefighters had to battle six different blazes on the property, but everything was under control by 12:30 p.m.
The Montgomery County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the explosions.
AmeriGas is the nation's largest supplier of propane.
