SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — A 12-year-old girl was airlifted to a children's hospital Monday in Sarasota County after her mother hit her with her vehicle while dropping her off near the school, officials said.

Students returned to school in most Florida counties Monday, including Booker Middle School in Sarasota. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 12-year-old girl was tragically hit by her mother's vehicle while she was being dropped off near the school Monday.

FHP said a 30-year-old mother stopped near school property around 7:45 a.m. to drop her daughter off. When the 12-year-old girl exited the SUV, FHP said she dropped markers and pens under the vehicle.

As the girl was bent over collecting her supplies, the crash report says the woman drove her vehicle forward and collided with the girl.

The child was airlifted to All Children's Hospital with critical injuries, the report states.

FHP is investigating the incident.
