CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-Voters ousted incumbent Mayor Henry Garrett in favor of real estate broker Joe Adame, as the economy and development weighed on Corpus Christi voters.
Joe Adame, 63, defeated Garrett with about 66 percent of the vote Saturday, compared to Garrett's 30 percent.
Garrett was defeated as concerns about the economy grows and the city struggles with a deteriorating coliseum, downtown revitalization, hurricane-batttered South Padre Island and infrastructure issues.
"I feel like he's going in the direction I want to go," Brenda Atherton, 35, said of Adame.
Bill Kelly, a councilman who was prevented by term limits from seeking re-election Saturday, said residents are concerned about jobs.
"Even though we've been insulated somewhat in Corpus Christi from the economic downturn in the country, we are feeling it," he said.
