HOUSTON — Fresh off her loss to John Whitmire in the Houston mayoral runoff, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has filed to run for reelection in the U.S. House.

The Harris County Democratic Party confirmed they accepted her application on Monday morning for the 18th Congressional District, a position she’s held since 1995, having served 14 terms.

In Saturday's runoff, Whitmire collected 64% of the vote to Jackson Lee’s 36%. The two went to a runoff after neither had more than 50% in November's general election.

Earlier this year, former Houston council member Amanda Edwards filed to run for Jackson Lee’s seat after suspending her campaign for mayor. The two will go against each other in the Democratic primary.

Edwards also posted to social media on Monday, saying, "It's time for change."

According to the Texas Tribune, Democrat Isaiah Martin also threw his hat in for Jackson Lee's seat while she ran for mayor.
